In 1862 the American optician Alan Graham Clarke, aiming at Sirius to check the optical properties of the 47 cm telescope built by his father, managed to see for the first time the companion of Sirius called Sirius B, a white dwarf.

In 1958, Explorer 1 was the first American artificial satellite successfully launched into orbit: a satellite born from the collaboration between Werner von Braun, James Alfred Van Allen and William H. Pickering. From this date the United States entered the space age after 4 months of the launch of the Soviet Sputnik

Nel 1958 l’Explorer 1 è il primo satellite artificiale statunitense lanciato in orbita con successo: un satellite nato dalla collaborazione tra Werner von Braun, James Alfred Van Allen e William H. Pickering. Da questa data gli Stati Uniti entrarono nell’era spaziale dopo 4 mesi del la cio dello Sputnik sovietico

In 1958 James Van Allen discovered the Fascias (belts) which take his name thanks to the Explorer 1 mission mentioned above. The two bands that surround our planet are composed of an internal and an external one. The internal one is stable and is made up of plasma of electrons and high-energy positive ions, while the external one is made up of only high-energy electrons and is much more dynamic, responding to solar storms.

Nel 1958 James Van Allen scopre le Fasce (cinture) che prendono il suo nome grazie appunto alla missione Explorer 1 sopra citata. Le due fasce che circondano il nostro pianeta, sono composte da una interna e una esterna. Quella interna è stabile ed è formata da plasma di elettroni e di ioni positivi ad alta energia, mentre quella esterna è costituita da soli elettroni ad alta energia ed è molto più dinamica, di risposta alle tempeste solari.
