In 240 BC. in the seventh year of SHIM-HUANG’s reign a comet (hui) first appeared in the east. She was then seen to the north. In the fifth moon it was seen for 16 days in the west. With this meager sentence, taken from the great encyclopedic work of MA TUAN-LIN (see photo), HALLEY’s comet entered history.

Nel 240 a.C. nel settimo anno del Regno di SHIM-HUANG una cometa (hui) apparve dapprima a est. Fu poi vista a nord. Nella quinta Luna fu vista per 16 giorni a ovest. Con questa scarna frase, tratta dalla grande opera enciclopedica di MA TUAN-LIN (vedi foto), la cometa di HALLEY entrò nella storia.

In 1939 Frank Dyson died, Royal Astronomer from 1910 to 1933, known for having introduced the Greenwich time signal and for the role played in verifying Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Nel 1939 muore Frank Dyson, astronomo Reale dal 1910 al 1933, noto per aver introdotto il segnale orario di Greenwich e per il ruolo giocato nel verificare la teoria della relatività di Einstein. 

In 1961 Kennedy presented himself to Congress with the proposal to achieve the goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth (before the end of the decade) with the Apollo program.

Nel 1961 Kennedy si presentò al Congresso con la proposta di raggiungere l’obiettivo di far atterrare un uomo sulla Luna e riportarlo sano e salvo sulla Terra (prima della fine del decennio) con il programma Apollo.

In 1966 Explorer Program: Explorer 32 (see photo) is launched from Cape Canaveral on a Delta-C1 rocket. It was the second of five satellites of the Explorer Program intended for the study of the upper atmosphere.

Nel 1966 Programma Explorer: viene lanciato l’Explorer 32 (vedi foto) da Cape Canaveral su un razzo Delta-C1. Esso era il secondo di cinque satelliti del Programma Explorer destinati allo studio dell’alta atmosfera.

In 1973, the launch of Skylab 2 (SL-2), a manned mission of the US space station Skylab, took place. The space laboratory had been damaged during its launch phase. For this reason, the mission was almost exclusively performed to repair the damage to the space station. By staying in space for four weeks, a new record was set for the longest stay in orbit.

Nel 1973 avviene il lancio dello Skylab 2 (SL-2), una missione con equipaggio della stazione spaziale USA Skylab. Il laboratorio spaziale era stato danneggiato durante la fase di lancio dello stesso. Per questo motivo la missione venne quasi esclusivamente eseguita per effettuare lavori di riparazione dei danni della stazione spaziale. Rimanendo nello spazio per quattro settimane venne raggiunto un nuovo record di lunga permanenza in orbita.

In 2008 the landing of the Phoenix lander (which remained operational for over two years) took place near the northern polar cap of the planet: a region rich in ice, a robot arm searched the arctic ground for any traces of water and microbes. The mission scientific objective of the probe was to study the Martian environment to verify the possibility of supporting microbial life forms and to study the possible presence of water in the environment.

Nel 2008 avviene l’ammartaggio del lander Phoenix (rimasto operativo per oltre due anni) nei pressi della calotta polare settentrionale del pianeta: una regione ricca di ghiaccio, un braccio robot ha cercato nel terreno artico eventuali tracce di acqua e microbi.. La missione scientifica della sonda era studiare l’ambiente marziano per verificarne la possibilità di sostenere forme di vita microbiche e per studiare l’eventuale presenza di acqua nell’ambiente.
