In 1887, the American astronomer Paul Willard Merrill (1887-1961) was born. He did important research on stellar spectra and interstellar matter.

In 1977 the WOW signal (see photo) was picked up by the Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio, so nicknamed by the exclamation made by its discoverer, the radio astronomer Jerry Ehman. It is a strong narrowband radio signal detected by the astronomer while working on the SETI search for extraterrestrial life project. The characteristics of the signal suggested that it came from outside the Earth and the solar system. The signal was received for 72 seconds, corresponding to Big Ear’s observation window, and was never detected again.

Nel 1977 captato il segnale WOW (vedi foto) dal radiotelescopio Big Ear nell’Ohio, soprannominato così dall’esclamazione che fece il suo scopritore, il radioastronomo Jerry Ehman. Si tratta di un forte segnale radio a banda stretta rilevato dall’astronomo mentre lavorava al progetto di ricerca di vita extraterrestre SETI. Le caratteristiche del segnale lasciarono intendere una provenienza esterna alla Terra e al sistema solare. Il segnale fu ricevuto per 72 secondi, corrispondenti alla finestra di osservazione di Big Ear, e mai più rilevato.
