In 1859: the largest solar storm ever recorded by a human instrument

In the 1993 flyby of the Galileo probe with the asteroid Ida at a distance of 2400 km, in this juncture a satellite asteroid called Dattilo was discovered with a diameter of 1.4 km, the first satellite possessed by an asteroid ever discovered. Measurements were made using the SSI camera, magnetometer and NIMS spectrometer. From subsequent data analysis, it appears as an asteroid of type SII, different from Ida. It has therefore been hypothesized that Dattilo was produced from the partial fusion of a larger body belonging to the Coronide family. The Coronid family of asteroids, to which Ida belongs, are located in the main belt.

Nel 1993 flyby della sonda Galileo con l’asteroide Ida a 2400 km di distanza, in questo frangente viene scoperto un asteroide satellite chiamato Dattilo con un diametro di 1,4 km, il primo satellite posseduto da un asteroide mai scoperto. Vennero effettuati i rilevamenti utilizzando la fotocamera SSI, il magnetometro e lo spettrometro NIMS. Dalle successive analisi dei dati, esso appare come un asteroide di tipo SII, differente da Ida. È stato quindi ipotizzato che Dattilo sia stato prodotto dalla fusione parziale di un corpo più grande appartenente alla famiglia Coronide. La famiglia Coronide di asteroidi, a cui appartiene Ida, è situata nella fascia principale.
