In 1897 George Hale founded the Yerkes Observatory, is known for having invented the spectroheliograph (an instrument for observing the Sun in monochromatic light, see image) and discovered magnetic fields in sunspots in 1908. He also identified a 23-year cycle in which the polarity of the magnetic fields of sunspots undergoes a reversal. He also discovered the general magnetic field of the Sun and determined its characteristics. Hale was responsible for the idea of ​​solar towers, which allowed the use of spectrographs at large focal distances thanks to the funds made available by the patron of the same name.

Doug Hurley (see photo) was born in 1966, a former US astronaut who participated in two Shuttle missions (STS-127 and STS-135) and the SpaceX Demo 2 test mission of the Crew Dragon commercial vehicle.

In 1967, the Danish astronomer Ejnar Hertzsprung died, known for having developed the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram together with Henry Norris Russell (see image). In 1913 he determined the distance of several galactic Cepheids, using the statistical parallax method, and thus calibrated the relationship later discovered by Henrietta Leavitt between the period and magnitude of the Cepheids. There was an error in his calculations, however, as the stars were estimated to be 10 times closer. He used his deductions to estimate the distance to the Small Magellanic Cloud.
