Gustav Friedrich Wilhelm Sporer was born in 1822, a pioneer of solar observation, particularly of sunspots and their cycles. A crater on the Moon was dedicated to him (see photo): the Spörer crater has a diameter of 27 km.

William David Coolidge was born in 1873, known for his decisive contribution to X-ray equipment; also became famous for the development of “ductile tungsten,” which is important for incandescent light bulbs

Ernst Julius Öpik was born in 1922, an Estonian astronomer and astrophysicist known for the theory, presented in 1932, of the presence of a cloud of debris orbiting beyond Pluto. According to Öpik’s hypothesis, this cloud would be the origin of most of the comets present in our solar system. The cloud was called the Oort cloud or, in honor of its theory, the Öpik-Oort cloud

Nel 1922 nasce Ernst Julius Öpik, astronomo e astrofisico estone noto per la teoria, esposta nel 1932, della presenza di una nube di detriti orbitante oltre Plutone. Secondo l’ipotesi di Öpik tale nube sarebbe l’origine della maggior parte delle comete presenti nel nostro sistema solare. La nube prese il nome di Nube di Oort o, in onore della propria teoria, nube di Öpik-Oortn venne valutata dagli astronomi nella giusta importanza per cui la radio astronomia non nacque che dopo la Seconda Guerra mondiale.
