In 1867, the Irish astronomer William Parsons Rosse (1800-1867), known as Lord Rosse, died. He built his Leviathan of Parsonstow, a 182 centimeter diameter telescope, which was for many decades the largest telescope in the world. He named the Crab Nebula, based on an earlier drawing made using his old 91-centimeter telescope, in which it resembled a crab (see Parsons’ 1844 sketch of the nebula).

In 2000, the ISS International Space Station was occupied for the first time with the launch of Soyuz TM 31.

In 2003 in Japan: the Belle experiment (see photo of the detector) announces the probable observation of the first tetraquark (exotic hadron) X(3872). 17 years later, in collaboration with LHCb, the observation of X(6900), the first heavy tetraquark composed of two charm quarks and two anticharm quarks, was announced.

In 2005, the discovery of two new satellites of Pluto was made public: Hydra and Nix, see images taken by the LORRI (Long Range Reconnaissance Imager) camera of the New Horizon probe.
