In 1884, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was adopted and 24 time zones were created. The name refers to the city of Greenwich, a suburb of London (United Kingdom), where, by international convention, the Greenwich meridian (also called prime meridian) with a longitude equal to 0° originates (see photo of the clock near the Greenwich Royal Observatory)

Nel 1919 nasce il cosmologo austriaco Hermann Bondi, coautore con Fred Hoyle e Thomas Gold della Teoria dello stato stazionario dell’universo in alternativa al modello del Big Bang. La sua eredità intellettuale più importante è dovuta però ai suoi lavori sulla teoria della relatività generale. Fu tra i suoi allievi Felix Pirani.

Nel 1976 nasce Andreas Mogensen, il primo astronauta danese scelto dall’ESA.

Nel 1977 viene scoperto Chirone (vedi foto) da Charles Kowal, dal telescopio Schmidt da 120 cm dell’Osservatorio di Monte Palomar; identificato come un asteroide, ma è in realtà una delle più massicce comete periodiche conosciute del sistema solare. La sua designazione cometaria è 95P/Chiron. È inoltre considerato il prototipo della classe degli asteroidi centauri, caratterizzati da orbite comprese fra quella di Saturno e quella di Urano.

In 1977 Chiron was discovered (see photo) by Charles Kowal, from the 120 cm Schmidt telescope of the Monte Palomar Observatory; identified as an asteroid, but it is actually one of the most massive periodic comets known in the solar system. Its cometary designation is 95P/Chiron. It is also considered the prototype of the class of centaur asteroids, characterized by orbits between that of Saturn and that of Uranus.

Nel 1996 vengono trovate nel meteorite ALH84001 delle formazioni che, per la loro morfologia, si riteneva potessero essere batteri fossili provenienti da Marte. Nella foto Il microscopio elettronico mostra una struttura a catena morfologicamente simile a organismi di natura biologica su un frammento del meteorite ALH 84001. Tuttavia in seguito un gruppo di scienziati riprodusse in laboratorio delle formazioni analoghe dimostrando che quelle osservate erano semplicemente strutture minerali che si formano autonomamente in determinate condizioni di calore e pressione. Così il famoso “batterio nel meteorite marziano”, si dimostrò essere soltanto un’illusione ottica

In 1996, formations were found in the ALH84001 meteorite which, due to their morphology, were thought to be fossil bacteria from Mars. In the photo The electron microscope shows a chain structure morphologically similar to biological organisms on a fragment of the ALH 84001 meteorite. However, later a group of scientists reproduced similar formations in the laboratory, demonstrating that those observed were simply mineral structures that form autonomously under certain conditions of heat and pressure. Thus the famous “bacterium in the Martian meteorite” turned out to be only an optical illusion
