In 1631 the French philosopher Pierre Gassendi observed a transit of Mercury over the Sun through a telescope, and the following year he published Mercurius in sole visus, which was the first actual observation of the passage of an inferior planet in front of the solar disk.

The Indian astrophysicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born in 1888 and won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 for the discovery of “Raman dispersion” (or Raman effect).

Nel 1888 nasce l’astrofisico indiano Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, Premio Nobel per la fisica nel 1930 per la scoperta della “dispersione Raman” (o effetto Raman).

The American physicist Philip Morrison was born in 1915; he discussed the thesis with future Manhattan Project leader Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967). Morrison also worked on this project, but abandoned it after the dropping of the two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1959, together with the Italian physicist Giuseppe Cocconi (1914-2008) in Nature, he published the article entitled “Searching for Interstellar Communications” from which all the SETI projects would later arise, including SETI@Home.

Nel 1915 nasce il fisico americano Philip Morrison; egli discusse la tesi con il futuro capo del Progetto Manhattan Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967). A questo progetto lavorò pure Morrison, che però lo abbandonò dopo lo sgancio delle due bombe atomiche su Hiroshima e Nagasaki. Nel 1959 assieme al fisico italiano Giuseppe Cocconi (1914-2008) su Nature, pubblica l’articolo dal titolo “Searching for Interstellar Communications” dal quale nasceranno in seguito tutti i progetti SETI, compreso SETI@Home.

In 1996, the American Mars Global Surveyor probe (see logo) was launched, a mapping mission that examined the entire planet of Mars, from the ionosphere to the atmosphere, up to the surface. As part of the Mars Exploration Program, the Mars Global Surveyor served as a booster for subsequent orbiters during the aerobraking phase, and aided Mars rover and lander missions by identifying potential landing sites

Come parte del Mars Exploration Program, il Mars Global Surveyor ha operato come ripetitore per gli orbiter successivi durante la fase di aerobraking, ed ha aiutato le missioni con rover e lander su Marte identificando i potenziali siti di atterraggio
