In 1864, discovery of the asteroid 82 Alcmene (see rendering), by the German astronomer Karl Theodor Robert Luther. In Greek mythology Alcmene is the wife of Amphitryon and the mother of Heracles.

Richard Christopher Carrington died in 1875, known for having discovered in 1863 the inequality of the speed of rotation of the Sun at different latitudes (differential rotation) by means of a long series of observations of sunspots. Carrington was the first to report the observation of a solar flare, recording its appearance on 1 September 1859 (see Carrington Event) and also established the first observation protocols that led to Spörer’s law.

Nel 1875 muore Richard Christopher Carrington noto per aver scoperto nel 1863 l’ineguaglianza della velocità di rotazione del Sole alle diverse latitudini (rotazione differenziale) per mezzo di una lunga serie di osservazioni delle macchie solari. Carrington fu il primo a riportare l’osservazione di un’eruzione solare registrandone l’apparizione il 1º settembre 1859 (vedi Evento di Carrington) e stabilì inoltre i primi protocolli osservativi che condussero alla legge di Spörer.
