In 1876, astronomer Walter Sydney Adams was born, known for his work in the field of solar spectroscopy, and was a co-discoverer of a relationship between the relative intensities of certain spectral lines and the absolute magnitude of a star. He demonstrated that the spectra could be used to distinguish giant stars from dwarfs.

Nel 1876 nasce l’astronomo Walter Sydney Adams, noto per i suoi lavori nel campo della spettroscopia solare, e fu co-scopritore di una relazione tra le intensità relative di alcune linee spettrali e la magnitudine assoluta di una stella. Dimostrò che gli spettri potevano essere utilizzati per distinguere le stelle giganti dalle nane.

In 1996, the great Carl E. Sagan, American astronomer, science communicator and science fiction author, died. During the 1960s and 1970s he collaborated with NASA on the Mariner, Voyager and Viking program missions. It was Sagan, together with Frank Drake, who had the famous plaque we see in the photo affixed to the Pioneer 10 probe. In 1977 the initiative was repeated with the Voyager Golden Record, developing a more complex and detailed message conveyed by a disc fixed to the Voyager probes and containing sounds and films. He was one of the founders of the SETI Project for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

Nel 1996 muore il grande Carl E. Sagan, astronomo, divulgatore scientifico e autore di fantascienza statunitense. Nel corso degli anni sessanta e settanta collaborò con la NASA per le missioni dei programmi Mariner, Voyager e Viking. Fu Sagan assieme a Frank Drake a far apporre sulla sonda Pioneer 10 la famosa targa che vediamo in foto. Nel 1977 l’iniziativa è stata ripetuta col Voyager Golden Record, elaborando un messaggio più complesso e dettagliato veicolato da un disco fissato alle sonde Voyager e contenente suoni e filmati. È stato uno dei fondatori del Progetto SETI per la ricerca delle intelligenze extraterrestri.
