In 1898 Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium which is the chemical element with atomic number 88 and its symbol is Ra. The word radioactivity derives from the name of this element for historical reasons. White in colour, it blackens upon exposure to air. It is an alkaline earth metal present in trace amounts in uranium ores. Its most stable isotope, 226Ra, has a half-life of 1602 years and decays to radon.

In 1898, the American astronomer Ira Sprague Bowen was born, known for having identified and explained the intense green emission lines in the spectra of planetary nebulae, previously attributed to some element not known on Earth, as due to the emission of nitrogen and ionized oxygen at very low pressures.

In 1978 the lander of the Soviet interplanetary probe Venera 12 (see image) passes through the atmosphere of Venus at a speed of 11.2 km/s, landing and transmitting data for almost two hours before stopping due to pressure and high temperature on the ground.
