In 1610 Galileo Galilei wrote Antonio de’ Medici a letter (see image) after he had been able to observe the Medicean moons Io, Europa and Callisto, which, together with the novelties scrutinized on the lunar surface, gave him concrete and real proof of the fallacy of the Ptolemaic system and the validity of the Copernican system. The news would later be reported in Sidereus nuncius.
