In 1909, the German mathematician Hermann Minkowski, known for having developed the geometric theory of numbers and used geometric methods to solve challenging problems in number theory, mathematical physics and the theory of relativity with which he collaborated with Albert Einstein, died.

In 2005, the Deep Impact probe was launched (see image) towards comet 9P/Tempel 1 (see image), a periodic comet of the Solar System, belonging to the Jovian comet family.

In 2010 the WISE space telescope (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, see image) discovered its first NEO, 2010 AB78 before even starting its official mapping of the sky. NEOs or “Near Earth Objects” are objects in the Solar System whose orbit can intersect that of the Earth and include thousands of asteroids, comets whose orbit approaches the Earth, probes orbiting the Sun, meteoroids large enough to be intercepted in space before hitting Earth. Nel 2010 il telescopio spaziale WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, vedi immagine) scopre il suo primo NEO, 2010 AB78 prima ancora di iniziare la sua mappatura ufficiale del cielo. I NEO ovvero “Near Earth Object” sono oggetti del Sistema Solare la cui orbita può intersecare quella della Terra e comprendono migliaia di asteroidi, le comete la cui orbita si avvicina alla Terra, le sonde orbitanti intorno al Sole, i meteoroidi sufficientemente grandi da essere intercettati nello spazio prima di colpire la Terra.
