In 1919, the American astronomer Edward C. Pickering, known for having discovered the first spectroscopic binary star together with Carl Vogel, died.

In 1965, launch of the Orbitant Solar Observatory 2 (OSO 2), with the aim of carrying out solar physics experiments above the atmosphere during a complete solar cycle and of mapping the entire celestial sphere regarding the direction and intensity of ultraviolet rays, X-rays and gamma rays. The satellite functioned normally until November 1965, when it began to experience problems and stopped functioning a few months later.
