In 1886, the English astronomer Eduard Arthur Milne was born, known for his version of general relativity, known as kinematic relativity.

In 1898, Fritz Zwicky was born, the first to use the virial theorem to deduce the existence of dark matter. He proposed the use of gravitational lenses. With Walter Baade, he developed the theory that supernovae can create neutron stars and produce cosmic rays. He also pioneered the use of Schmidt telescopes.
