In 1600, Giordano Bruno, an Italian philosopher, writer and Dominican friar condemned to the stake by the Church for heresy, died. In his countercurrent thoughts, he maintained that there is an infinite number of universes and not just one and that God was found in nature, regardless of whether in man or in animals, where every divine being was of equal dignity. His uncomfortable thinking clashed with the Church which considered man at the top of creation and the Sun at the center of the universe. Here I want to report one of his beautiful quotes: “I think of an infinite universe. In fact, I consider it unworthy of the infinite divine power that, being able to create beyond this world another and infinite others, it had produced only one, finite one. So I spoke of infinite particular worlds similar to Earth.”

Nel 1600 muore Giordano Bruno, un filosofo, scrittore e frate domenicano italiano condannato al rogo dalla Chiesa per eresia. Nei suoi pensieri controcorrenti, sosteneva che esiste un’infinità di universi e non uno soltanto e che Dio si trovasse nella natura, indistntamente se nell’uomo o negli animali, dove ogni essere divino era di pari dignità. Il suo pensiero scomodo si scontrava con la Chiesa che considerava l’uomo al vertice del creato ed il Sole al centro dell’universo. Qui voglio riportare una delle sue bellissime citazioni: “Io penso a un universo infinito. Stimo infatti cosa indegna della infinita potenza divina che, potendo creare oltre a questo mondo un altro e altri ancora, infiniti, ne avesse prodotto uno solo, finito. Così io ho parlato di infiniti mondi particolari simili alla Terra.”
