The German astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm August Argelander was born in 1799, known above all for his studies on the brightness, position and distance of stars.

Nel 1799 nasce l’astronomo tedesco Friedrich Wilhelm August Argelander, noto soprattutto per i suoi studi in merito alla luminosità, alla posizione e alla distanza delle stelle.

The French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen was born today in 1824. He confirmed that the Moon has no atmosphere and, in 1867, demonstrated that the atmosphere of Mars contains water vapour. His studies on solar radiation and its alterations due to crossing the Earth’s atmosphere are well known. On the occasion of a total solar eclipse he noticed, a bright yellow line in the spectrum of the solar chromosphere with a wavelength of 587.49 nm., that element was helium: discovered at the same time as Sir Norman Lockyer.

Nel 1824 nasce l’astronomo francese Pierre Jules César Janssen il quale conferma che la Luna non possiede atmosfera e, nel 1867, dimostra che l’atmosfera di Marte contiene vapore acqueo. Noti i suoi studi sull’irraggiamento solare e le sue alterazioni dovute all’attraversamento dell’atmosfera terrestre. In un occasione di un’eclisse totale di Sole egli notò, una riga gialla e brillante nello spettro della cromosfera solare con una lunghezza d’onda di 587,49 nm., quell’elemento era l’elio: scoperta in contemporanea con Sir Norman Lockyer.

In 1996, the Columbia shuttle was launched from Cape Canaveral for the Space Shuttle program with the STS-75 mission where on board there were two Italians, Maurizio Cheli, the first European with pilot duties and the astrophysicist Umberto Guidoni. The STS-75 mission carries the Tethered Satellite (TSS). STS-75 ended on March 9, 1996, 15 days, 17 hours, 40 minutes and 22 seconds after launch.
