In 1802 the amateur astronomer H. Wilhelm Olbers discovered the asteroid 2-Pallas, a large asteroid that orbited within the main belt, the innermost asteroid belt of the solar system. It was the second asteroid to be spotted after Ceres, and the first to be spotted by a non-professional astronomer. Its mass is estimated to constitute 7% of that of the entire main belt. Its diameter, 512–545 km, is comparable to that of Vesta, although Pallas is 20% less massive. It is a probable protoplanet. The surface of Pallas is made up of silicates; the surface spectrum and the estimated value for the density are reminiscent of carbonaceous chondrites. Pallas follows a highly inclined orbit (34.8°) compared to the average plane of the orbits of the objects of the main belt, characterized, furthermore, by a considerable eccentricity, almost equal to that possessed by Pluto

Si stima che la sua massa costituisca il 7% di quella dell’intera fascia principale. Il suo diametro, pari a 512–545 km, è confrontabile con quello di Vesta, sebbene Pallade sia meno massiccio del 20%. È un probabile protopianeta. La superficie di Pallade risulta costituita da silicati; lo spettro superficiale ed il valore stimato per la densità ricordano le condriti carbonacee. In 1946, Wubbo Ockels, a Dutch physicist and astronaut, was born, the first citizen of the Netherlands to go into space; in 1985 he participated in the STS-61-A mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger and was a trainer for the European astronauts of ESA (European Space Agency).

Nel 1946, nasce Wubbo Ockels, un fisico e astronauta olandese, il primo cittadino dei Paesi Bassi ad andare nello spazio; nel 1985 ha partecipato alla missione STS-61-A dello Space Shuttle Challenger e fu preparatore degli astronauti europei dell’ESA, (Agenzia Spaziale Europea).
