In 1841, the German astronomer Hermann Karl Vogel was one of the first to use the spectroscope in astronomy and to determine the Sun’s rotation period by observing the Doppler shift. He was the discoverer of spectroscopic binary stars: but what are they? They are a system of two stars orbiting their common centre of mass of which the brighter one is called the primary and the other the companion or secondary. Astronomers are important and supportive of their work. An example of this is the Palidoro amateur astronomers’ group that discovered a new binary star in Gemini through the UAI Remote Telescope in 2021. Congratulations!
