In 1744 the astronomer ANDERS CELSIUS (1701-1744) died. He was professor of astronomy at Uppsala University from 1730 onwards. In 1733 he published in Nuremberg the results of 316 observations of the aurora borealis, made by himself and others between 1716 and 1731. In 1736 he took part in the Lapland expedition, organized by the French Academy for the measurement of an arc of meridian, and in 1742 he presented a memoir to the Swedish Academy of Sciences (translation into German with biographical and critical notes, in the Ostwazds Klassiker n. 57) in which he described the centigrade thermometer, to which his name is linked.

In 1848 A. Graham discovered asteroid 9 Metis, one of the largest asteroids in the main belt. It is composed of silicates, nickel and iron in the metallic state; it could actually be the residual core of a large asteroid that disintegrated following a remote collision.
