In 1805 was born the Italian astronomer Francesco de Vico, known for the discovery of several comets, observations of Saturn and the divisions in its rings (the first to observe what is now known as the Keeler division), and study on the period of rotation of Venus. The lunar crater De Vico (see photo) and the asteroid 20103 de Vico are named after him.

In 1961 – Venera Program: Venera 1 becomes the first artifact to pass another planet, surpassing Venus (however the probe had lost contact with Earth a month earlier and did not send back any data)

In 1971 the Soviet probe Mars 2 was launched. The Mars 2 lander was the first man-made object to impact the surface of the red planet. The images and data sent by the orbiter revealed the presence of mountains as high as 22 km, the existence of sandstorms up to 7 km high, surface temperatures between -110 °C and +13 °C, the existence of hydrogen and atomic oxygen in the upper atmosphere, a concentration of water 5,000 times lower than on Earth, a surface pressure of 5.5-6 mbar and the presence of an ionosphere starting from 80-110 km of altitude. Furthermore, the images taken made it possible to create a first map of the Martian surface. The lander crashed on the surface because after entering the atmosphere, at a speed of about 6 km/s, the controlled descent system malfunctioned, perhaps due to the too narrow angle of entry and it was not possible to deploy of the parachute.

Nel 1971 avviene il lancio della sonda sovietica Mars 2. Il lander di Mars 2 fu il primo oggetto costruito dall’uomo a impattare con la superficie del pianeta rosso. Le immagini e i dati inviati dall’orbiter rivelarono la presenza di montagne alte ben 22 km, l’esistenza di tempeste di sabbia alte fino a 7 km, temperature superficiali comprese tra -110 °C e +13 °C, l’esistenza di idrogeno e ossigeno atomico nell’atmosfera superiore, una concentrazione di acqua 5.000 volte inferiore a quella terrestre, una pressione superficiale di 5,5-6 mbar e la presenza di una ionosfera a partire da 80–110 km di quota. Inoltre le immagini riprese permisero di realizzare una prima mappa della superficie marziana. Il lander si schiantò sulla superficie poichè dopo l’ingresso nell’atmosfera, ad una velocità di circa 6 km/s, funzionò male il sistema di discesa controllata, forse a causa dell’angolo di entrata troppo stretto e non fu possibile l’apertura del paracadute.
