In 1872 Charles Greeley Abbot was born, American astrophysicist and astronomer, as well as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Abbot quickly developed techniques to obtain a more accurate value of the solar constant of 1.93 cal/cm²/min (today’s value is expressed in Watts per square metre).

In 2006, the American physicist Raymond Davies Jr died, known for having received the Nobel Prize for Physics “in 2002, together with Riccardo Giacconi and Masatoshi Koshiba for their pioneering contributions to astrophysics, and in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos ”.

In 2008 from Cape Canaveral the space shuttle Discovery was launched for the STS-124 mission (see photo), dedicated above all to the insertion of the Japanese laboratory KIBO on the International Space Station.
