In 1665 the astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini announced the discovery of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot (see photo), although the first sighting is often credited to Robert Hooke, who described a spot on Jupiter in May 1664

In 1837 the French astronomer Edouard Stephan was born, known for having discovered the group of galaxies now known as Stephan’s Quintet (see photo @hubble telescope). In 1868, during a solar eclipse, he observed the spectrum of solar prominences and noticed a new type of absorption lines. The element that emitted them was helium, which will be discovered by chemists on Earth 17 years later.

Nel 1837 nasce l’astronomo francese Edouard Stephan noto per aver scoperto il gruppo di galassie oggi note come Quintetto di Stephan (vedi foto @hubble telescope). Nel 1868 durante un eclissi solare osserva lo spettro delle protuberanze solari e nota un nuovo tipo di righe di assorbimento. L’elemento che le emetteva era l’elio, che verrà scoperto dai chimici sulla Terra 17 anni dopo.
