In 1640, after having received the second condemnation of his ideas by the Holy Office, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) wrote a letter to Fortunato Liceti in which he renewed his criticism of the late followers of Aristotelianism with unchanged conviction.

In 1844 the Modenese astronomer Annibale Riccó was born, a professor of theoretical physics who took the place of Pietro Tacchini as the first astronomer of the Ravenna Observatory and then became director of the Catania Observatory and the Etna Observatory. He left many notes on topics of physical astronomy, especially solar. The asteroid 1995 QS2 was named in his honor 18462 Riccò, as was a 65 km crater on the Moon.

Nel 1844 nasce l’astronomo modenese Annibale Riccó, professore di fisica teorica che prese il posto di Pietro Tacchini come primo astronomo dell’Osservatorio di Ravenna per poi diventare direttore dell’Osservatorio di Catania e dell’Osservatorio Etneo. Lasciò molte note su argomenti di astronomia fisica, specialmente solare. L’asteroide 1995 QS2 è stato chiamato in suo onore 18462 Riccò, come anche un cratere di 65 km sulla Luna.

In 1736 the French astronomer Jean-Sylvain Bailly was born, an expert above all in paleoastronomy and known for his numerous treatises on ancient, modern and oriental astronomy and for his observations, among which, particularly notable, those on two comets, including that of Halley, as well as the essay on the theory of Jupiter’s satellites.

Nel 1736 nasce l’astronomo francese Jean-Sylvain Bailly esperto soprattutto di paleoastronomia e noto per i suoi numerosi trattati sull’astronomia antica, moderna e orientale e per le osservazioni tra le quali, particolarmente notevoli, quelle su due comete, tra cui quella di Halley, nonché il saggio sulla teoria dei satelliti di Giove.
