In 1586 the astronomer Egnazio Danti died, known for his numerous works including the seven tables of the Treatise on the Sphere (1567), the Treaty on the use and construction of the Astrolabe (1569), the Treaty on the use of the Sphere ( 1569) and the translation of Proclus’s Sphere (1573) and that of Euclid’s Perspective (1573). In 1580 Gregory XIII (1502-1585) appointed him pontifical cosmographer, called him to be part of the Commission for the reform of the calendar and entrusted him with the direction of the famous Geographical Tables of Italy painted in the Vatican Gallery. He participated in various engineering works and was called to Rome to assist Domenico Fontana in the difficult work of raising the great obelisk in St. Peter’s Square.

Nel 1580 Gregorio XIII (1502- 1585) lo nominò cosmografo pontificio, lo chiamò a far parte della Commissione per la riforma del calendario e gli affidò la direzione delle famose Tavole Geografiche dell’Italia dipinte nella Galleria Vaticana. Partecipò a varie opere d’ingegneria e fu chiamato a Roma per coadiuvare Domenico Fontana nella difficile opera di innalzare il grande obelisco di Piazza S. Pietro.

In 1859 the nebulosity surrounding the Pleiades was noticed for the first time. Ernst Wilhelm Tempel observed this while observing Merope from Venice. G. Pascoli writes: “The Little Chioccetta through the blue threshing floor / goes with its peep of stars” (The night jasmine).

Nel 1859 viene notata per la prima volta la nebulosità che avvolge le Pleiadi. Lo constatò Ernst Wilhelm Tempel mentre osservava Merope da Venezia. G. Pascoli scrive: “La Chioccetta per l’aia azzurra / va col suo pigolio di stelle” (Il gelsomino notturno).

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born in India in 1910, known for his important contributions to the study of the structure of stellar evolution and dynamics. Nobel Prize in 1983. He died in Chicago on August 21, 1995.

In 2016, launch of the Soyuz MS-02 probe (see photo) with the astronauts of Expedition 49-50 of the ISS on board: Shane Kimbrough (of NASA), Sergey Ryzhikov (commander of the Soyuz) and Andrey Borisenko (both of the agency Russian Roscosmos).
