In 1885 the American astronomer Harlow Shapley was born, an American astronomer who used the variable stars RR Lyrae to estimate the size of the Milky Way, and with the parallax method he concluded that the position of the Sun within the Galaxy was not in the vicinity of the nucleus, which was instead located in the direction of the constellation of Sagittarius.

Nel 1885 nasce l’astronomo americano Harlow Shapley, un astronomo statunitense che usó le stelle variabili RR Lyrae per stimare le dimensioni della Via Lattea, e con il metodo della parallasse concluse che la posizione del Sole all’interno della Galassia non era nelle vicinanze del nucleo, che si trovava invece in direzione della costellazione del Sagittario.

In 2002 the Stardust probe flyby 3000 km from the asteroid (5535) Annefrank (see photo). The probe visually tracked the asteroid for 30 minutes as it flew by at a speed of about 7 km/s.

Nel 2002 sorvolo della sonda Stardust a 3000 km dall’asteroide (5535) Annefrank (vedi foto). La sonda ha rintracciato visivamente l’asteroide per 30 minuti mentre volava vicino ad una velocità di circa 7 km/s.

In 2006, the mission of the Mars Global Surveyor probe (see image) in Martian orbit ended after 9 years of activity.
