In 2016, US astronaut John Herschel Glenn, Jr. died (see photo). He is remembered among the Mercury Seven, the first seven NASA astronauts assigned to the Mercury space program. In 1962 he became the first American to enter orbit around the Earth, (remaining 4 hours and 55 minutes in space) with the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission. Curiosity: Glenn agreed to leave only when the calculations for the flight, carried out with electronic computers , were verified by hand by the African-American “human calculator” Katherine Johnson. His return was punctuated by numerous technical problems, including an alleged heat shield problem that put the astronaut’s life at risk.

Nel 1962 divenne il primo statunitense a entrare in orbita attorno alla Terra, (rimanendo 4 ore e 55 minuti nello spazio) con la missione Mercury-Atlas 6. Curiosità: Glenn accettò di partire solo quando i calcoli per il volo, effettuati con elaboratori elettronici, furono verificati a mano dalla “calcolatrice umana” afro-americana Katherine Johnson. Il suo rientro fu costellato da numerosi problemi tecnici, tra cui un presunto problema allo scudo termico che mise a rischio la vita dell’astronauta.
