In 1742 the English astronomer Edmond Halley died. In 1705 he published Astronomiae cometicae synopsis in which he set out his belief that the comet sightings of 1456, 1531, 1607 and 1682 were of the same comet, and predicted its return in 1758. When this occurred, it became known as Halley’s Comet (see photo).

Nel 1742 muore l’astronomo inglese Edmond Halley. Nel 1705 pubblicò Astronomiae cometicae synopsis nel quale espose il suo convincimento che gli avvistamenti cometari del 1456, 1531 1607 e 1682 erano relativi alla stessa cometa, e ne predisse il ritorno nel 1758. Quando ciò accadde, divenne nota come la Cometa di Halley (vedi foto).

In January 1881, the American astronomer Francis Gladheim Pease was born, a researcher of rare talent, remembered above all for the determination of stellar diameters and the measurement of the speed of light.

Nel gennaio 1881 nasce l’astronomo statunitense Francis Gladheim Pease ricercatore di raro ingegno ricordato soprattutto per la determinazione dei diametri stellari e la misurazione della velocità della luce.

The German physicist Ernst Abbe died in 1905. He was responsible for many advances in instrumental optics, dedicating himself to the improvement of lenses and optical devices (such as the orthoscopic eyepiece). He was the inventor of a refractometer that bears his name (Abbe refractometer), the Abbe condenser and the Abbe prism, and we see an example in the photo of a microscope with his lenses.

Nel 1905 muore il fisico tedesco Ernst Abbe, a lui si devono molti progressi nell’ottica strumentale dedicandosi al perfezionamento delle lenti e degli apparecchi ottici (come l’oculare ortoscopico). Fu inventore di un rifrattometro che porta il suo nome (rifrattometro di Abbe), il condensatore di Abbe e il prisma di Abbe, e vediamo un esempio in foto di microscopio con sue lenti.

In 2003 the Japanese collaboration SPring-8 observes with certainty the first pentaquark, the news will be officially announced on July 4th.

Nel 2003 la collaborazione giapponese SPring-8 osserva con certezza il primo pentaquark, la notizia verrà annunciata ufficialmente il 4 luglio.

In 2010 the WISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) space telescope began mapping the sky by the satellite which had already discovered its first NEO on 12 January.
