In 1948, Henri A. Deslandres, a French astronomer, director of the Paris Observatory and one of the great pioneers of modern solar astronomy, died. An asteroid 11763 Deslandres and the Deslandres crater on the Moon were dedicated to him.

In 1969 the Soviet Union launched Soyuz 5 (see image), the fourth flight equipped with this capsule as well as the thirteenth flight within the Soviet Soyuz program.

In 1991 the physicist Livio Gratton died; author of more than 200 scientific works, architect of the rebirth of Italian astronomy after the Second World War, he was interested in stellar astrophysics, with particular attention to stellar spectroscopy, as well as theoretical and space astrophysics.

In 2014 the amateur astronomer John Dobson died, known mainly for having invented a model of Newtonian Reflecting Telescope with large aperture, low cost and easily transportable, universally known as Dobsonian or Dobsonian.
