His counter-current theory on the Big Bang caused a sensation where, according to him, the universe is oscillating, and expands and contracts alternately ad infinitum.

In 2011 the Italian astrophysicist Franco Pacini died; director of the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory, he has participated in various international collaboration projects. One of these led to the construction of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), the largest single-mount optical telescope ever built.
