In 1702 Eustachio Manfredi wrote a letter addressed to Count Luigi Ferdinando Marsili on the inadequacy of the London QUARÈ clocks for astronomical observations as they did not run with the required regularity. In fact, it is already clear from the Records of the Marsiliano Observatory in Bologna that they were never used for observations.

Infatti già dai Registri dell’Osservatorio Marsiliano a Bologna si evince che non furono mai impiegati per le osservazioni.

In 1884 the German astronomer Johann Friedrich Schmidt, a tireless and accurate observer in all branches of astronomy, died. His most famous work is the map of the Moon. This map, in twenty-five sections, with the representation of 32,856 craters, required thirty-four years of work: it is unrivaled as regards the clarity of the drawing and the considerable quantity of details.

Nel 1884 muore l’astronomo tedesco Johann Friedrich Schmidt, osservatore infaticabile ed accurato in tutti i rami dell’astronomia. L’opera sua piú famosa è la carta della Luna. Questa carta, in venticinque sezioni, con la figurazione di 32.856 crateri, richiese trentaquattro anni di lavoro: essa è senza rivali per quanto riguarda la chiarezza del disegno e la quantità considerevole dei particolari.

The Russian astrophysicist Solomon Borisovic Pikelner was born in 1921, dedicated to the physics of the Sun and interstellar space, in particular to magnetofluid dynamics and the physics of fast particles.
