In 648 BC. the ancient Greeks recorded the first solar eclipse, so spectacular that it was mentioned by the Greek poet Archilochus. What is it about? The solar eclipse is an optical phenomenon where the Moon during the new moon obscures all or a good part of the solar disk seen from the Earth: the Sun, Moon and Earth must be perfectly aligned in this order when the Moon, whose orbit is inclined by five degrees with respect to the ecliptic, intersects the latter at a point called the node. When the node is between the Earth and the Sun, the Moon’s shadow passes over some points of the Earth’s surface and we witness a solar eclipse. Nel 648 a.C. gli antichi greci registrano la prima eclissi solare, talmente spettacolare tanto da essere menzionata dal poeta greco Archiloco. Di cosa si tratta? L’eclisse solare è un fenomeno ottico dove la Luna durante il novilunio oscura tutto o buona parte del disco solare visto dalla Terra: il Sole, Luna e Terra devono essere perfettamente allineati in quest’ordine quando la Luna, la cui orbita è inclinata di cinque gradi rispetto all’eclittica, interseca quest’ultima in un punto detto nodo. Quando il nodo si trova tra la Terra e il Sole, l’ombra della Luna passa in alcuni punti della superficie terrestre e si assiste a un’eclissi solare.
