In 1972 the Apollo 16 mission departed from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida; it was the tenth manned mission of the US NASA Apollo program and the fifth and at the same time the penultimate ever to land on the Moon. The second of the program’s “J missions,” Apollo 16 was flown by Commander John Young, Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke, and Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly. The Apollo 16 landing site was chosen in the highlands, to allow the astronauts to collect lunar material that was geologically older than the samples obtained in three of the first four moon landings. Samples taken from the Descartes plateau and Cayley crater have refuted the hypothesis that they were craters of volcanic origin.

Seconda delle “missioni J” del programma, Apollo 16 venne guidata dal comandante John Young, dal pilota del modulo lunare Charles Duke e dal pilota del modulo di comando Ken Mattingly. Il punto di allunaggio dell’Apollo 16 fu scelto sugli altopiani, per consentire agli astronauti di raccogliere materiale lunare geologicamente più antico rispetto ai campioni ottenuti in tre dei primi quattro allunaggi. Campioni prelevati dall’altopiano Descartes e dal cratere Cayley hanno smentito l’ipotesi che fossero crateri di origine vulcanica.

In 2015, the Martian rover Curiosity took this exceptional panorama with its navigation camera (Navcam) immediately after completing a journey that brought the total driving distance of the mission to over 10 km.
