In 1884 Giovanni Battista Lacchini was born, an expert on variables. During his activity at the Astronomical Observatory of Trieste (from 1933 to 1952) he managed to disassemble and fortunately bring to safety the precious equipment during the bombings of 1944.

In 1930 the “Ulrico Hoepli” Civic Planetarium in Milan was inaugurated (see photo), the second in Italy after the one in Rome (inaugurated in 1928).

In 1978 the Pioneer Venus mission took off; the Pioneer Venus Orbiter was a flat cylinder 2.5m in diameter and 1.2m high. All of the spacecraft’s instruments and subsystems were mounted on top of the cylinder, except the magnetometer, which was located at the end of a 4.7 m long rod. A solar panel extended around the circumference of the cylinder. A 1.09 m dish antenna provided S- and X-band communications with Earth. It carried 16 experiments

Tutti gli strumenti e i sottosistemi della sonda erano montati sulla sommità del cilindro, eccetto il magnetometro, che si trovava alla fine di un’asta lunga 4,7 m. Here we see the first image of the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990. It is a double star located in the open cluster NGC 3532 in Carina. Despite the aberration in the mirror that prevented it from achieving the sharpness that researchers had hoped for from the beginning (later resolved in 1993 with the shuttle mission Sts-61), HST represents a milestone in the journey of discovery of deep space. Thanks to his eye, researchers were able, among other things, to see planets in more depth than before, observe galaxies and nebulae, confirm or disprove theories, explore space and time.

Qui vediamo la prima ripresa del Telescopio Spaziale Hubble nel 1990. Si tratta di una stella doppia situata nell’ammasso aperto NGC 3532 nella Carena. Nonostante l’aberrazione nello specchio che gli impediva di raggiungere la nitidezza che i ricercatori auspicavano fin dall’inizio (risolta poi nel 1993 con la missione shuttle Sts-61), HST rappresenta una pietra miliare nel viaggio alla scoperta dello spazio profondo. Grazie al suo occhio, i ricercatori hanno potuto, tra le altre cose, vedere pianeti in modo più approfondito rispetto a prima, osservare galassie e nebulose, confermare o confutare teorie, esplorare lo spazio e il tempo.

In 2006, the Italian researcher Vittorio Castellani died, a well-known astrophysicist engaged in studies of young stellar populations, the problem of solar neutrinos, the structure of the galactic halo and dwarf galaxies.

Nel 2006 muore il ricercatore italiano Vittorio Castellani, noto astrofisico impegnato su studi di popolazioni stellari giovani, sul problema dei neutrini solari, sulla struttura dell’alone galattico e delle galassie nane.

In 2010, JAXA launched the first Japanese Venusian probe Akatsuki and a new and innovative solar sail Ikaros, the first space probe entirely designed to operate solely with solar pressure. It had a sail of 196 m² and a mass of 315 kg. He traveled to Venus correcting his course only by sail, successfully reaching the planet after 5 1/2 months. The secondary mission then continued at times for another 5 years, with some periods of radio silence due to attitude maintenance problems.

Nel 2010 avviene il lancio dalla JAXA della prima sonda venusiana giapponese Akatsuki e una nuova e innovativa vela solare Ikaros, la prima sonda spaziale interamente progettata per funzionare solamente con la pressione solare. Aveva una vela di 196 m² e una massa di 315 kg. Ha viaggiato verso Venere correggendo la sua rotta solo per mezzo della vela, con successo, raggiungendo il pianeta dopo 5 mesi e mezzo. La missione secondaria è poi proseguita a tratti per altri 5 anni, con qualche periodo di silenzio radio per problemi di mantenimento dell’assetto.

In 2022 the great Greek composer known as VANGELIS died; his famous music of Blade Runner for example (and like all his discography for that matter) made us dream… A great loss in the world of music.

Nel 2022 ci lascia il grande compositore greco conosciuto come VANGELIS; la sua celebre musica di Blade Runner ad esempio (e come tutta la sua discografia del resto) ci ha fatto sognare… Una grande perdita nel mondo della musica.
