In 1847 the English astronomer John Russel Hind (1823-1859) discovered the asteroid 8-Flora (see rendering). Hind is known to be one of the first discoverers of asteroids, he discovered 10; the first, in 1847, was 7 Iris. Hind was also the co-discoverer of comet C/1846 O1 de Vico-Hind.

In 1962, NASA’s Ranger 5 probe (see photo) was launched towards the Moon with the aim of photographing it and carrying out some scientific studies before falling to the ground.
