In 1991 the Galileo probe carried out the flyby with the asteroid Gaspra (see image), a main belt asteroid with an average diameter of about 12.2 km discovered in 1916.

In 1998 the Space Shuttle Discovery took off with seventy-seven year old John Glenn on board (see photo) who at the time was the oldest person to have gone into space, today surpassed by William Shatner as a man (Captain Kirk 90) and by Wally Funk (80) as a woman aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962.
