In 1659 the Dutch astronomer Christian Huygens identified a dark spot on Mars: the Syrtis Major (see photo), a large volcanic region north of the equator of Mars which extends over an area of ​​about 1500 kilometres, or about half the size of Europe.

Christian J. Doppler was born in 1805, an Austrian mathematician and physicist, famous for the hypotheses of what we now know as the Doppler effect, that is, the apparent change in frequency and wavelength of a wave perceived by an observer in relative motion with respect to to the source of the wave itself.

Nel 1805 nasce Christian J. Doppler un matematico e fisico austriaco, famoso per le ipotesi di ciò che oggi conosciamo come effetto Doppler, cioè l’apparente cambio di frequenza e lunghezza d’onda di un’onda percepita da un osservatore in moto relativo rispetto alla sorgente dell’onda stessa. 

In 1961, Mercury Atlas 5 was launched (see photo) with the chimpanzee Enos on board who survived the mission.
