In 1905 the Dutch astronomer Gerard P. Kuiper was born, known for his studies on the theory of the formation of the solar system such as the formation of planetesimals and the role played by collisions in the early history of the solar system, supporting the idea that terrestrial craters came from from impacts with bodies external to the Earth, its role in the infrared spectroscopic astronomy program with flights at great heights (12,000 m) is important. We remember the discovery of Nereid, (one of Neptune’s natural satellites), Miranda (Uranus’ moon) and the atmosphere of Titan (Saturn’s moon). He also collaborated on NASA projects studying the lunar surface and identifying possible sites for the Apollo missions to land on the moon. However, Kuiper is known for his intuition of the existence of a band of cometary material beyond the orbit of Neptune, coming from the formation of the solar system, later confirmed in 1991 and known as the Kuiper Belt.

Kuiper, noto per gli studi sulla teoria della formazione del sistema solare come la formazione dei planetesimi e il ruolo svolto dalle collisioni nella storia primitiva del sistema solare, sostenendo l’idea che i crateri terrestri provenissero da impatti con corpi esterni alla Terra, importante il suo ruolo nel programma di astronomia spettroscopica nell’infrarosso con voli a grandi altezze (12.000 m). Si ricorda la scoperta di Nereide, (uno dei satelliti naturali di Nettuno), di Miranda (luna di Urano) e l’atmosfera di Titano (luna di Saturno). Collaborò inoltre in progetti della NASA studiando la superficie lunare e identificando possibili siti per l’allunaggio delle missioni Apollo. Kuiper è tuttavia noto per l’intuizione dell’esistenza di una fascia di materiale cometario oltre l’orbita di Nettuno, proveniente dalla formazione del sistema solare, confermato poi nel 1991 e conosciuto appunto come Fascia di Kuiper.

In 1979, the Anglo-American astronomer Cecilia Payne died, known for her studies which led her to argue that hydrogen was by far the largest constituent of the Sun, around 90%. However, since it was then mistakenly believed that the Sun was made up mainly of iron (similar to what happens in the Earth’s core), Henry Norris Russell, a well-known astronomer, told her that the results were wrong, and then published them himself a few years later, taking all the credit.

Nel 1979 muore l’astronoma anglo-americana Cecilia Payne, nota per i suoi studi che la portarono a sostenere come l’idrogeno fosse di gran lunga il maggior costituente del Sole, circa il 90%. Tuttavia, dato che allora si riteneva, erroneamente, che il Sole fosse costituito principalmente di ferro (in analogia con quanto accade nel nucleo della Terra), Henry Norris Russell, un astronomo molto noto, le disse che i risultati erano errati, per poi pubblicarli lui stesso pochi anni dopo, prendendosi tutto il merito.
