In 1872 Heber Curtis was born, best known for having been one of the protagonists, with Harlow Shapley, of the famous Great Debate of 1920 on the nature of nebulae and galaxies and on the dimensions of the Universe.

In 2010 NASA’s Deep Impact probe (see image) fly-by with Earth, then traveling towards comet Hartley 2 (see image) which it will approach on November 4, 2010.

In 2011, the asteroid 2011 MD passes just 12,000 km from the Earth’s surface. In 2024 at 10.16pm Italian time, asteroid 2011 UL 21 will pass 6.6 million km from Earth, 17 times the distance of the Moon. The asteroid has a diameter between 1.7 and 3.9 km, which is among the largest to have passed by since 1900.
