In 1612 Galileo Galilei wrote the first of three letters which focus on a dispute between Galileo Galilei and a German scientist, the Jesuit Cristoforo Scheiner (mentioned with the pseudonym Apelles) on the discovery of sunspots. There is discussion about the priority of the discovery and the nature of sunspots: Scheiner, respecting the ideology of the Church and ancient astronomy (which considered the nature of the Sun and all the stars perfect and immutable), maintains that they depend on swarms of celestial bodies rotating around the Sun. Galileo, however, states that they are an integral part of the solar surface and atmosphere (whose motion depends on the rotation of the sun around its axis) and that they cannot be celestial bodies due to their irregularity. We find the letters in the work Istoria, causing the first troubles with the scholastics and theologians who supported the unalterability of the heavens.

Nel 1612 Galileo Galilei scrisse la prima di tre lettere che riportiamo qui e incentrate su una disputa tra Galileo Galilei e uno scienziato tedesco, il gesuita Cristoforo Scheiner (menzionato con lo pseudonimo Apelle) sulla scoperta delle macchie solari. Si discute sulla priorità della scoperta e sulla natura delle macchie solari: Scheiner, nel rispetto dell’ideologia della Chiesa e dell’astronomia antica (che consideravano la natura del Sole e di tutti gli astri perfetta e immutabile), sostiene che dipendono da sciami di astri ruotanti attorno al Sole. Galileo, invece, afferma che sono parte integrante della superficie e dell’atmosfera solare (il cui moto dipende dalla rotazione del sole intorno al proprio asse) e che non possono essere astri a causa della loro irregolarità. Le lettere le troviamo nell’opera Istoria provocando i primi guai con gli scolastici e i teologi sostenitori della inalterabilità dei cieli.
